Caring For Your Marble Floors To Protect The Beauty And Investment

Marble is a beautiful option for finishing kitchens and bathrooms. Unfortunately, it's not a material that can be left alone for years before anything needs to be done. Marble will need some special attention from you if you'd like it to maintain its beauty. Here, you'll find a few tips that can help you keep your marble looking great.

Invest in a Quality Dust Mop

Marble floors must be kept clean to prevent the dirt and debris from scratching or discoloring it. The best tool for the job is a quality dust mop. You can find them in various sizes and shapes, so you're sure to find one that will make dust mopping the floor a breeze no matter how many obstacles you have.

Dust mop the floor at least every other day. If the room sees a lot of traffic, it would be best to take care of this task daily.

Use a Flat Mop for Cleaning

You don't have to get down on your hands and knees to get a streak-free shine. Instead, purchase a flat mop with a removable terry cloth or microfiber cover. These covers are removed, dunked into water, wrung out, put back on the mop head and then used to gently clean the floor to a shine.

When mopping the floor, don't use harsh cleaning chemicals and never use anything that contains ammonia – like glass cleaner. The ammonia can remove the sealant that is protecting the flooring.

If you get hairspray or other sticky products stuck to the floor that won't come off with water, mix a cup of white vinegar with a gallon of water. Use this mixture to clean the area. If that doesn't work, use straight vinegar on a soft cloth to buff the sticky stuff off of the flooring.

Seal the Marble Regularly

Talk with your marble installation professional to find out what sealant would work best for your marble flooring. Some sealants work better and last longer than others. Some are easier to apply. You want to find a product that is easy to apply, will last at least a few months and will protect the marble between applications.

If you are still unsure of how to care for your marble floors properly, talk to the professionals about what else you can do to ensure that the investment that you've made into the flooring is protected and will continue to shine for years to come.
